Airport Explosive Detection K-9 Unit Specialist Officer Gina Maggiacomo
Gina Maggiacomo was born and raised in Long Island, NY. She grew up with the desire to follow her father’s footsteps in Law Enforcement as early as her pre-teenage years. She moved to Tampa, Florida in 1982 and pursued her dream to become a Law Enforcement Officer by attending the Hillsborough Community College Basic Law Enforcement Recruit Academy in 1996.
In 1997, she interviewed and accepted a position as a Traffic Specialist at Hillsborough County Aviation Authority where she gave assistance and guidance to the public. Enforced parking laws while maintaining safety and control of vehicles and pedestrians.
In March of 2011, Officer Maggiacomo decided that she was up for a new challenge. She interviewed and attained the position of Explosive Detection Canine Handler. Successfully completing, top of her class, the Transportation Security Administration National Explosives Detection Canine Handler Course, a 10 week course conducted at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Officer Maggiacomo is the first female Explosive Detection Canine Handler since inception of the K-9 Unit in 1992.
